Circumstances shape us. In the face of adversity, we either give up or push harder. Brokeasfchose to push harder. Surviving a near fatal shooting, weathering the trials and tribulations of one of Jacksonville’s toughest hoods, and still racking up millions of streams and views on his own with no proper promotion, the 17-year-old Florida rapper stayed down and true to himself, making music with no regrets or apologiesat all.
“I have my own way of doing things,” he exclaims. “So many people are out here trying to be someone they’re not. They’re in this for the wrong reasons. I’m not reaching like that. I’m not clout chasing. I do shit for me. I had a near-death experience. I’vebeen through all of that. I’m trying to get the next oneand go crazy.”
He understoodthe darker side of life at a young age. Born with a twin sister, he grew up with a totalof seven siblings. His dad did two years in jail for selling drugs before cominghome, and mom tirelessly worked in a warehouse. She often played the likes of Lil Wayne and Gucci Mane around the house, introducing him to rap.
At 14-years-old, he and his twin endured a horrificdrive-by. His sister got shot in the leg and would be released from the hospital the same night.
Brokeasf wasn’t so lucky...
“I got shot in my stomach, my chest, and my arm,” he recalls. “They had to cut me open. I was in the hospital for a month. I didn’t leave the house much for a few months after that. It was fucked up. That was my childhood.I’ve seen all sides of it. My city is a lot of killing. When I was growing up, I found out what that shit was really quickly.”
In 2019, he began spittingon Instagram and built up a following for fierce, focused, and fieryfreestyles. He engaged an active fan base as,“People knewmefrom the streets, so my posts would get a lot of shares,”he states.
Brokeasf ignited 2020 with the single “Comments.” Within a coupleofmonths, it generated 3.7 million totalstreams and countingin the US. On track, he bodies an ominous beat punctuated by beeps with his fast flows, gruff delivery, and a hard-hitting hook. The hunger immediately comes through as he breathlessly rhymes.
“I was on my regular freestylingvibe,” he explains. “Motherfuckers had me fucked up that day by talking a lot of shit and tweetingthough. I heard that beat and started laying it down.”
However, he doesn’t stop there. Brokeasf pushes just as hard on more music to comethroughout 2020.
“I don’t want my music justto be sad,” he leaves off. “I want it to be up-tempo and make you shake your head. I didn’t go through all of this not to enjoy it.I could’ve been a victim to this, but I’m not. I’m young. I’m intelligent. I feel like I got no flaws. That’s who the fuck I am.”
