As stylists, make-up artists, managers, label reps, publicists and latte-wielding assistants mill around a cramped hotel suite, I can’t help but think the obvious: all these people are gathered here to realize one woman’s vision. And we’re reminded that she’ll be arriving any minute.

Given that we’re talking about Nelly Furtado here, one can safely assume she isn’t holding us up because of any celebrity-induced affectation or to squeeze in an extra half-hour of full-body Shiatsu.

The Canadian musician of Portuguese descent didn’t exactly build her eclectic, thriving career by indulging a larger-than-life persona. Often described as “genuine,” Furtado first burst onto the scene at the turn of the century with the refreshingly folksy mish-mash of sounds that was Whoa, Nelly!, a timely counterpoint to the derivative diva ditties, nu-metal and pop-punk that had hijacked the airwaves.
Nine years after “I’m Like a Bird,” that initial Grammy and her first tour (opening for U2, no less), she could have long since faded into obscurity, as happens to many young contenders thrust into the limelight.

(O-Town, Good Charlotte, Michelle Branch and fellow namesake Nelly, anyone?) But those kids had evanescent appeal, whereas Furtado has continually reinvented herself. And that cautionary tale of precocious stardom couldn’t be further from Furtado’s reality, as she’s just coming off her most colossal triumph yet, the seductive and groovyLoose– one of 2007’s top-selling albums, certified platinum in 18 countries. Yet her success hasn’t chipped away at her invariably genial disposition.

Upon walking into the bustling room, she greets everyone with a beaming smile and warm handshakes. She exudes that girl-next-door, naturally gorgeous glow, made all the more radiant by her infectious giggle and eyes that could charm their way through a hostage situation.

So when the well-mannered Furtado politely asks for a few minutes to attack her shrimp salad before we begin, how could I say no? Say It Right A few minutes to scarf down your greens is all you get when you’re set to release your first Spanish-language album concurrently in all of Universal Music’s 77 territories worldwide – a move being touted as the most ambitious Spanish-language release ever for a mainstream star – and your own label (Nelstar Music) is responsible for delivering all creative components, from album and videos to artwork.

That creative control comes at a price, but it’s also non-negotiable for Furtado who has spent her career overseeing decisions about her image. “I think whatever is totally homemade, you’re always more proud of,” she says with unabashed enthusiasm, in reference to her new album Mi Plan. “Aren’t you more proud of the homemade chocolate-chip cookies than the ones you bought at the store for the party? You can offer them up with so much pride!” The idea for a full-length in Spanish – her third language, which she learned in high school and now speaks with her Cuban-American husband – came about very naturally when Furtado hit a writer’s block in the studio.

Her friend, Cuban-Canadian singer-songwriter Alex Cuba suggested shifting linguistic gears. Border-Smashing Folklore “Every time I’d travel around and see fans in the audience who perhaps don’t even speak English singing along to all my songs with partially incorrect lyrics, I’d realize that they’re there for the feeling,” Furtado explains.

“It’s not so much about the lyrics or the language, it’s about the emotion, the whole package.” And before she could shout ¡ándale!, she had assembled a who’s who of top-notch Latin musicians to contribute to the project, from Mexican crooner Alejandro Fernández to bachata legend Juan Luis Guerra, and even Josh Groban to boot. A gutsy move – especially considering she evaluates her Spanish fluency at 50-60% – but one that befits Furtado’s relentless craving for new challenges. “I think that any career that someone pursues, there’s always a desire to get better, to learn,” she says.
“Everybody wants that extra credential on their business card, they want to go to that seminar, they want to challenge themselves. And I’m no different, I take my job seriously and I love it! I love being a musician.

Music brings me so much joy that I think I just have a desire to share that joy with people.” Remember the Days The result is a more personal, funky and acoustic sound that hearkens back to her debut. Gone are the theatrics of Loose and the femme fatale character that Furtado embodied so convincingly that some criticized what they saw as an attempt to sex up her image. But Furtado is clearly not in the business of making such calculated career moves, viewing her artistic evolution as a very organic process, determined by her emotional state at the time of recording.

“I remember riding in the back seat of my mom’s car when I was about four years old, staring out the window, and I had symphonies in my head. Like, complete orchestral symphonies! And it would never end! I never really understood where they came from, but before you knew it, I was filling notebooks and journals with songs because I just had to get it out. So I think that because music is my language, it’s always very natural for me to morph and change.

Whatever I’m going through in life always gets reflected in the music, so stylistically I’ve never had any boundaries, I’ve always seen music as very universal.” As much as Furtado is wholly driven by her craft, her appreciation for some well-earned time off confirms my suspicions that deep down she’s just like us mere mortals. Respite came in the form of an entire year off, after what she describes as the “glammed-out Loosetour, which was fun, but high heels, you know?” “We had been celebrating the success of the album, every awards show, every number one. We’d toast [with] a lot of champagne.” If there’s an ounce of truth to that, chances are Furtado & Co.

boozed their way through the year, with chart-topping hits to check off in too many countries to list here. “I took a one-year sabbatical where I did nothing – I went to the park with my daughter [Nevis, now six], we ate chicken noodle soup and I took her to school! So the second year I started writing Mi Plan, and I found that a lot of the topics on the album were taken from simple everyday life. They’re love songs too.

But regular ones, like I love you, period, not I love you, but!” Her Plan And what rewards a decade’s worth of hard work will reap. The small-town girl from Victoria, who moved to Hogtown to “aprovechar” as she tells me, “to make the most of the scene and get involved artistically,” is now in a position to impart wisdom from lessons learned to those doe-eyed newbies still marvelling at the thought of their names on a marquee somewhere.

“I can never be a new artist again but I can hang around new artists and feel the buzz,” she says, giggling. She’s adamant about supporting the city’s lively cultural scene and didn’t beat around the bush when it came to making Toronto’s glamtronic quartet Fritz Helder & The Phantoms the first act signed to Nelstar Music. “We had a showcase for them in New York, and when they heard about the people who were in the crowd – Marc Jacobs, Madonna’s producer Stuart Price, Ali from A Tribe Called Quest – their faces just lit up! I remembered my first showcases in LA and New York and that excitement, that ‘aha!’ moment, and it’s so fulfilling to be around.” Moments before taking off for this magazine’s photo shoot, she gives me a quick rundown of what’s in store in the short term – and we’re not even talking about the Spanish release! Chief among those projects is some kind of English release (with producing maven Timbaland, of course) for 2010.
And as we compare notes on our darling musicians du jour (she singles out Robyn, I respond with Lykke Li), she has nothing but hopeful words about the direction currently being taken by mainstream music.

“I like that a lot of artists right now are multilayered and not so pigeonholed. I like that music right now is very fusion, very eclectic. Because when I started out, everything was based on this old rock model. So it’s really refreshing now that everybody’s iPod is so diverse. The doors are wide open.”

Nelly Furtado acaba de publicar su cuarto disco de estudio, 'Mi plan', durante cuya presentación, ha concedido una entrevista a la publicación alemana 'Frau im Spiegel'.

Furtado ha reconocido que uno de los sueños que todavía no ha cumplido es protagonizar y producir una película, ya sea de cine o de televisión. "Sería capaz, si hace falta, de vestirme de gallina y cacarear", ha confesado la artista, quien se considera "una persona visual".

La intérprete de 'Turn Off The Light' ha explicado que cada vez se siente más cerca de su origen portugués y que le encanta "sumirse a gusto en sentimientos melancólicos", aunque eso sí, "sobre todo cuando los curo con vino tinto y flan de huevo".

Actualmente, Furtado comparte su vida con el técnico de sonido cubano Damacio Castellón y describe su amor como "una lucha permanente para ver quien es más fuerte y quien es más débil", en la que se descubre que "aquellos a los que mas amas son los que más te pueden irritar". Además, la cantante —que tiene una hija de seis años fruto de su anterior matrimonio con Jasper Gahunia— no descarta ampliar algún día su familia. Sus parientes de Portugal "tienen todos seis o siete niños". "Con sólo una hija me siento como una extraterrestre".

Nelly Furtado está envuelta en la promoción de su nuevo disco en español, Mi Plan. Para ello, la artista convocó el pasado lunes en Madrid a representantes de diversos medios de comunicación, entre los que se encontraba Los40.com. Manejándose bastante bien en nuestro idioma, Nelly pasó a desvelarnos los entresijos de su nuevo álbum.

Al preguntarle por la inspiración para este álbum, la cantante respondió: "Después de mucho tiempo estando contínuamente de gira, decidí tomarme dos años de descanso. El primero lo dediqué a pasar tiempo con mi marido y mi hijo, disfrutando de las pequeñas cosas y recuperando la conexión conmigo misma. Y luego empecé a trabajar en este disco, que es como un diario íntimo con ritmo".

Nelly nos habló también de su pasión por el pop latino y la intensidad emocional que le transmite, que ha sido una de las principales razones que le han llevado a atreverse con un álbum en español: "Cuando grabé con Juanes Fotografía, en 2002, descubrí la magia del idioma español, y profundizé en su relación con mi lengua materna, el portugués. Luego escribí un tema para Jennifer López y, desde ese momento, me planteé el reto de escribir un disco íntegramente en español. Ahora me siento una artista más global, más libre, es como si hubiera empezado de nuevo."

A la hora de enfrentar las letras, Nelly se apoyó en su colaborador Alex Cuba, pero también contó con la ayuda de su marido, el cubano Demacio Castellón: "Practiqué mucho con él, esforzándome por hablar en español durante los momentos más íntimos. Para mí ha sido un logro poder expresar mis sentimientos en este idioma". La cantante recalcó también la importancia que han tenido sus "invitados especiales" a la hora de dotar al disco de un auténtico sabor latino: "Quería que fuese un álbum muy auténtico, y por eso quise rodearme de músicos españoles y latinos a los que admirase".

Entre estos, encontramos figuras de la talla de Juan Luis Guerra, Alejandro Fernández, Concha Buika, y, en el tema Bajo otra luz, con Julieta Venegas y La Mala Rodríguez: "Para mí fué como un sueño trabajar con La Mala, ella es eléctrica, heavy y muy inteligente. Recuerdo que se plantó delante del micro nada más llegar al estudio. En cuanto a Julieta, siempre he sido muy fan de ella, la conocí cuando estaba grabando mi primer disco. Ella escribió Bajo otra luz, y anoche me dijo que recordaba la grabación de este tema como si hubiera sido un ritual de tres brujas.

Fue una experiencia muy poderosa. " Nelly aseguró también que no teme decepcionar con este disco a su público de habla inglesa, ya que espera que sus fans hagan el esfuerzo de abrirse a nuevas lenguas, al igual que hacen los oyentes de lengua hispana: "No quiero excluir a nadie, todos están invitados a la fiesta". Por último, la cantante habló de sus planes de futuro: "Por el momento, quiero centrarme en presentar este disco al mundo, en cantarlo en directo.

Por otro lado, compuse y grabé algunas canciones en inglés con Timbaland durante esta primavera, es muy probable que acaben en mi próximo álbum. Y quién sabe, cuando sea más mayor y haya acumulado más experiencia, tal vez me atreva a grabar un disco de fados portugueses."

La cantante se pasa al idioma castellano en su cuarto disco. Lo ha presentado en Madrid y ha charlado con Qué.es sobre sus secretos. Nelly Furtado: "En español se canta con más pasión" La artista canadiense Nelly Furtado posa para Efe durante la presentación de su nuevo trabajo, "Mi Plan", de carácter marcadamente latino. Nelly Furtado tiene un plan, y ha decidido contárselo al mundo en castellano. "Descubrí la magia del español gracias a Juanes, cuando grabamos el tema 'Fotografía' en 2002", cuenta Nelly Furtado a Qué!.

"Eso en el terreno profesional. En el personal, resulta que mi marido es latinoamericano, de Cuba, y con él hablo en español". "Sobre todo me comunico con mi marido en español en los momentos más íntimos y románticos. Me resulta más fácil expresar mis emociones en español".

Esta mezcla de emociones y sensaciones ha dado como resultado 'Mi plan', su cuarto disco grabado por entero en nuestro idioma. "No quiero que sea un disco excluyente, quiero invitar a todo el mundo a esta fiesta". "Me he dado cuenta", confiesa Nelly Furtado, "que incluso a aquellas personas a las que no les gusta mucho la música, tienen al menos un CD en casa. Y ese CD está en español. Así que ha llegado el momento de que mi público se adapte a este idioma. Si es tan bello y tan funcional, por algo será".

Un disco que ya está a la venta y que contiene exitazos como 'Manos al aire'. "No me preocupan las ventas. Para eso está mi manager, para que le den a él los dolores de cabeza, no a mí", ríe Nelly. Sencilla, divertida y con unos enormes ojos azules, la cantante de 'Loose' confesó: "Para mí, el verdadero éxito no reside en las listas de ventas, sino en mi propia libertad, en ir abriendo puertas". ¿Y para cuando un disco en portugués, su lengua natal? "Para cuando tenga más experiencia vivida. Es lo que me dijo mi madre, que aún no estoy lista para cantar en portugués. Me falta vida".

Celebs unleash their wild sides for Alzheimer’s charity | News

Lady Gaga, Brandon Flowers and Nelly Furtado have all posed with stuffed elephant toys to raise money for a charity working with Alzheimer’s patients. Stars like Anne Hathaway, Jennifer Garner and Sienna Miller have also joined the cause and helped The Elephant Project, in collecting more funds for the Alzheimer’s Association.

The celebs have also autographed Elephant Project cards, which are being auctioned on eBay.com, reports the Daily Express.
The 34 celebrity auctions are open for bidding until October 13.

Llegó y ganó un Grammy. El de Mejor actuación vocal femenina de pop que le dieron por I'm Like a Bird, single de su disco debut publicado en 2000. Cuatro años más tarde, tras un álbum sin mucha repercusión, la cantante luso-canadiense le puso música a la Eurocopa de Portugal.

En 2006, de la mano del todopoderoso productor Timbaland facturó un buen puñado de hits (Promiscuous y Say it right) y saboreó la fama internacional. Acostumbrada a la cabeza de las listas de ventas, ahora, Nelly Furtado acaba de publicar su cuarto disco, Mi plan. Un trabajo en el que ha cambiado el inglés por el castellano.

Extremadamente menuda, entre carcajadas y frases en las que se mezclan con naturalidad los dos idiomas que usará sobre el escenario, Furtado habla del dulce momento por el que pasa. Tras ocho años empalmando una gira con otra, "estaba físicamente cansada. Fue casi como si perdiera mi inspiración en inglés", explica. "Necesitaba una nueva salida y la encontré escribiendo en español.

Cantar en castellano me hace sentir como una artista nueva". Una vocalista "renovada" que se muestra más íntima que nunca. "Este disco es como un diario pero con ritmo. Muestra lo más importante de mi vida personal. Como en el tema Suficiente tiempo, en el que cuento lo mal que llevo no tener más horas para dedicarle a mi familia, mi marido y mi hija". Se puede decir que enseña su "alma más latina" y mis "sentimientos más románticos y apasionados". Habla "de la realidad de un modo muy orgánico".

De pequeña, sentía "una enorme conexión latina" cuando hablaba portugués con sus progenitores ambos emigrantes-. Ese cúmulo de sensaciones se repitió cuando escribió una canción para Jennifer Lo-pez y la banda sonora de El Cantante. Este idioma le ha permitido "volar" gracias a "la riqueza de sus letras".

Además, grabar Mi plan fue "una fiesta. Nos reímos muchísimo en el estudio y fue muy divertido trabajar con tantos artistas invitados. En mi web se puede ver parte de ese espíritu. Hemos colgado varios de los vídeos que grabamos". Furtado ha contado con la colaboración de los mexicanos Julieta Venegas y Alejandro Fernández, la rapera española Mala Rodríguez, Juan Luis Guerra y Josh Groban.

"Tengo mi propio sonido, eso es evidente, pero ellos tuvieron libertad para expresar su propio estilo", cuenta agradecida. Mientras ella viaja y hace promoción, el disco triunfa en el mercado estadounidense, donde su single Manos al aire se mantuvo durante varias semanas en la lista Billboard. Algo que, a sus 30 años y con más de 18 millones de discos vendidos, no le preocupa mucho. "Eso es el dolor de mi manager. Para mí el éxito no está en las cifras sino en abrir puertas y experimentar". Eso fue lo que hizo con Timbaland. "En primavera escribimos 20 canciones en dos días. Fue inspirador". Así, su próximo disco podría ser en inglés. "Para cantar fado aún me falta vida. Necesito tener más experiencias".

Julieta Venegas "A Julieta la conocí hace ya 10 años, fue una conexión instantánea. Como estoy acostumbrada a trabajar con hombres, poder hacerlo con una chica fue muy especial. Ella escribió 'Bajo otra luz' pensando en mí". La Mala Rodríguez Cuenta Furtado que la grabación de 'Bajo otra luz' junto a Venegas y La Mala fue un aquelarre: "Julieta decía que parecíamos tres brujas alrededor de la marmita".

Fue "un sueño, María es eléctrica e inteligente y su letra es brutal". Juan Luis Guerra 'Como lluvia' es el título de la canción que Nelly Furtado canta con el cantante y compositor dominicano. Juntos han grabado un vídeoclip de esta balada, que es, probablemente, el tema más meloso de la carrera de la artista.

Josh Groban Furtado también convenció para que participara al cantante clásico -pero también superventas- Josh Groban. cantan juntos en 'Silencio'. Una experiencia que la cantante considera como una "bendición inmensa".

Nelly Furtado Dice que para ella el gran reto del pop es parecer una mujer “entera” y no unidimensional.
Nelly es tímida, sexy, coqueta, súper estrella. Todo a la vez. Aquí habla de pop, pasión, idiomas y de la paradoja de llamar a un disco “Mi plan”, cuando lo importante es no tener ninguno Los caminos de la carrera de Nelly Furtado son insondables.

Desde su debut, a principios de esta década, su trayectoria ha estado plagada de sorpresas y levantamientos de ceja. Pero nada como lo que tiene entre manos. Porque Nelly acaba de publicar un disco grabado completamente en castellano, sin ser ella nada de eso. Y no un disco dirigido solamente al público latino, sino un lanzamiento internacional en toda regla.

Ni rastro de Timbaland y Danja, los productores artífices de su gran blockbuster, “Loose” (2006). En su lugar, multitud de colaboradores conocidos, en el mejor de los casos, sólo en el círculo panhispánico. ¿Qué la habrá llevado a acometer semejante suicidio comercial? ¿Se habrá vuelto loca o habrá sido abducida por Juanes? Veinte escasos minutos de conversación telefónica (nada reprochable: al fin y al cabo, ella sí es una estrella) son suficientes para que nos explique que no ha sido nada de eso. O sí. Cada uno que lo juzgue como quiera.
La entrevista transcurre en inglés, pero Nelly cambia frecuentemente y sin previo aviso a un aceptable castellano aderezado de expresiones portuguesas. Muy aldea global, como siempre le ha gustado a ella. Todo empieza bien porque parece encantada con la sesión de fotos que Vanidad le ha hecho en Miami. “Fue muy bien. La ropa era increíble y hacía muy buen tiempo”.

David Roemer, el fotógrafo cuenta que: “Ella es súper divertida, imparable. Muy cercana, a pesar de ser una súper estrella. Y lo demostró totalmente: su representante nos dijo que le podíamos hacer, como mucho, dos fotografías. Pero ella se involucró totalmente en la sesión y se quedó mucho más tiempo”. Christopher Campbell, el estilista de la sesión, sigue: “Nelly tiene un sentido de la moda absolutamente personal.

Me sorprendió combinando increíblemente accesorios que jamás pensé que funcionarían juntos, como unas sandalias de tacón altísimo con unos pantalones de piel ajustadísimos de Helmut Lang. Funcionó espectacularmente bien, ella estaba divina y fue su idea. La conversación con Nelly sigue, y la querencia por las palabras “awesome” y “great” hacen dudar de la profundidad de futuras respuestas, pero el temor acaba por desaparecer. Por si alguien lo dudaba, Nelly Furtado no es absurda. Es más, se podría definir como un verdadero encanto.

¿De dónde viene la idea de grabar un álbum entero en castellano? Viene de una combinación, de una cadena de acontecimientos. Canto en portugués desde pequeña, incluso antes de cantar en inglés. Se podría decir que siempre me he sentido cómoda cantando en lengua latina. Ha sido un camino natural. En los 10 años que llevo grabando discos, el 80% de las canciones estaban interpretadas en inglés y el 20% en idiomas latinos. Supongo que quería equilibrar el balance.

Nelly Furtado weds her music to a Latin soul. At least that's her 'Plan' The singer's new album, 'Mi Plan,' is racing up the charts from Mexico to Europe, a tribute to her ability to tap into a multicultural background. Nelly Furtado "I tried to write in English a few times, and it was, like, forget about it. I just had no inspiration," Nelly Furtado says. Strutting into Westwood's W Hotel in a tight purple dress, matching pumps and isn't-she-somebody-famous? sunglasses, Nelly Furtado is the very model of a modern pop princess.

The burly bodyguards, the anxious makeup assistant, the aura of casual conspicuousness -- it's all there. But a few minutes later, seated poolside and sipping camomile tea after swapping her high heels for slippers, Furtado is as sensible as her footwear. Bubbling with sly humor, thoughtful observations and emotional frankness, she lays out the back story to her new album, "Mi Plan" (My Plan), her debut all-Spanish-language CD, released Tuesday.

The album's first single, "Manos al Aire" (Hands in the Air), an up-tempo cri de coeur to a sensitivity-challenged lover, has been racing up the charts from Austria to Mexico, a testament to Furtado's global-musical mentality and polyglot marketing power. A world tour, including an L.A. stopover, is scheduled to start later this year.

Though some might interpret "Mi Plan" as a belated dash into the booming Latin pop market, Furtado, the child of immigrants who moved from Portugal's Azores archipelago to Canada, points out that she always has split her recordings roughly 80% to 20% between English and Spanish. She also kept a clause in her DreamWorks Records contract allowing her to make Latin albums whenever she liked.

"Mi Plan," the chanteuse says, came out of her desire to delve deeper into Iberia's lyrical sensibility, which she previously has explored in duets with colleagues such as Colombian superstar Juanes.

She also felt, instinctively, that Spanish would be the best tongue for conveying her current state of being as a working mom who savors the quotidian pleasures of parenting, making music and daily life in her Toronto hometown. "I tried to write in English a few times, and it was, like, forget about it. I just had no inspiration," she says. "And then when I started writing in Spanish it was like, 'Whoa! I get to finally pay tribute or experiment with all the Latin pop sounds that I love. And all the artists.'

" In Furtado's case that's a lengthy list. She began compiling it as a child, through her exposure to traditional Portuguese fado, folkloric and pop music, which she heard at church, in her family's home and in the immigrant environs of Victoria, British Columbia. She has vivid memories of summers spent visiting the family's ancestral home in the Azores and of rummaging through mildewed boxes crammed with compositions written by her grandfather, a conductor and marching band composer.
"I remember looking at pieces of my grandfather's old clarinet after he passed away and holding them in my hands, and just [feeling] a lot of raw musical energy." She took Portuguese lessons until she was 12, a run-up to her adolescent crush on Brazilian music and her embrace of such iconic artists as Tom Zé and Caetano Veloso.

In high school she started studying Spanish, the linguistic sibling of Portuguese. She reckons her command of the language is now 50% to 60%. But it wasn't until she matched vocals with Juanes on his No. 1 Hot Latin hit song "Tu Fotografia" -- and repaid the favor by asking him to chime in on her own single "Te Busque" -- that Furtado found her comfort zone. Additional collaborations with artists including Calle 13, electronica-tango outfit Bajofondo Tango Club and reggaeton duo Wisin & Yandel helped cement her Spanish-language connection.

The clincher was Furtado's marriage last year to Cuban American producer Demacio "Demo" Castellon, who had worked with her on 2006's "Loose" album, which sold 10 million copies worldwide. "That makes all the difference, because then you find yourself using Spanish a lot more, in a lot more personal situations, intimate situations," she says. In making "Mi Plan," Furtado said, she felt she needed collaborators to fully tap into the rich melodic and poetic possibilities of Spanish-language culture.

So she enlisted such can't-miss talent as Mexican pop-alt-rocker Julieta Venegas, the Spanish jazz-flamenco singer Concha Buika, Mexican crooner Alejandro Fernández and a wild card, Josh Groban, the L.A. singer-songwriter whose eclectic gifts make him something of a spiritual cousin to Furtado. "I just think he's incredible because he's in his own lane and he's very fearless," Furtado says. Most crucial for the new record was Furtado's decision to team up with Cuban Canadian singer-bassist Alex Cuba, who helped pen most of the tracks on "Mi Plan." "Nelly is somebody very real.

She lays it down flat on a table. She just tells you what she's feeling," says Cuba, who just released his own album, "Agua del Pozo," and will be performing today at the Mint. Furtado says that singing in Spanish allows her to channel deeper, contradictory feelings than might be permitted in English, turning emotions on a dime.

"Singing as a Latin female I can be less two-dimensional," she says. "Like 'Manos al Aire,' in the verse I'm kind of almost angry. I'm accusing my lover. I'm, like, mad. But in the chorus I'm vulnerable, and I throw my hands up and say, 'You know what? I want to make this work.' And I think in English the song would be a train wreck." So far, Furtado's career has been smooth motoring while veering from cheeky funk and hip-hop to sophisticated forays into Afro-Brazilian batucada, samba and tropicalia.

Occasionally, though, her tendency to shed old stylistic skins and grow new ones has divided her critics, particularly over rhythmically frisky releases such as the 2003's "Folklore." Entertainment Weekly praised the disc as "exultant music" that goes "on its merry, multicultural way," but Rolling Stone dismissed it as a "slick, multicultural hodgepodge.

" From Furtado's perspective, it's not so much that she has changed as that her media followers have. "When I came out with my first CD, I would tell people that the CD was influenced by . . . Tom Zé, Caetano Veloso, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan," she recalls. "And it was like I'd get blank stares from journalists. Because some of them had never heard world music." Today's sonic landscape is much richer, she believes, thanks largely to the Internet and iTunes.

Listeners of all stripes are more accustomed to -- and have come to better appreciate -- music that embraces a host of global influences, including her own. "In 2010, it'll be 10 years since my first album came out. And now I finally feel like I fit in."

Singer-songwriter Nelly Furtado went to the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) Daycare Center as a spokesperson for Jumpstart’sRead for the Recordcampaign. During this event they announced that a limited edition of Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar, which is the Read for the Record official campaign book, will be on sale at WalMartstores nationwide.

Read for the Record will take place on October 8, 2009. The goalis to break the world record as adults read the same book on the same day to more than one million children across the USA. Another goal of the campaign is to raise both awareness and funds to support Jumpstart’s work. Jumpstart works with preschool children in low-income communities. The organization is working toward the day when all children enter school prepared to succeed. In addition to Ms. Furtado, the program’s co-sponsors were there.

Stacy Morrison, the Editor-in-Chief of Redbook, started off the conference. Also, Michelle Gilliard, Director of the WalMartFoundation, and Raymond Garcia, from the Pearson Foundation spoke.Nelly talked about her commitment to the Jumpstart program and her commitment to the literacy cause. At the press conference, Nelly talked about her daughter who will turn six in a few days, “…reading has been such a huge part of our lives. I read to her daily when she was a baby. We have a lot of books at home. And, I was shocked to hear that…in some households there might be as little as zero, one, two or three books in low income households all across America. I remember when I was a child my parents saving their hard-earned money and buying us the ChildcraftEncyclopedias.

They were our whole world and inspired a love of reading. I know that it’s so important to get that language in the children before they even get to kindergarten because then they have the familiarity there. And so, it’s really special to be here because I really love books.”Nelly echoed the same thoughts in my one-on-one with her. As a mother of a young girl, she realizes that it’s key to set the groundwork for literacy early. Jumpstart’s Read for the Record campaign is a great way to get started andmake sure that children start school with the basic skills they need to succeed. For Nelly, the appeal is it’s not intimidating to get started. Anyone can get a book and read to a child.

What could be easier? During the event, Nelly recorded a PSA to promote Jumpstart. However, best of all, a few lucky preschool kids got to enjoy Nelly reading The Very Hungry Caterpillarto them.

How "Mi Plan" started | Diary

Now that "Mi Plan" is out and I have been able to share it with you guys, I go back and think how interesting the creation process is. I personally can only write if I am inspired, and the inspiration for this album was my daily life and everyday moments. I would go to the studio and meet with Lester Mendez or Alex Cuba and James Bryan and they would play a track for me and based on what had happened in my day the melodies would start flowing and words or images would come to my head, I would then sit with Alex or Lester and finish the lyrics to the melodies that the feeling of the song inspired me. Someday I would love to show you guys how the melodies are born and then you can compare it with the finished song....I don't know just felt like sharing that with you!

It would be really nice to know where your inspiration come from, not just for music, but for everything you do in life!!

I'm gonna look for some recordings of the making process of each song, maybe i can share them with you guys, i'd really love to show you that awesome experience of expressing and putting into words my feelings and my life...

Singer Nelly Furtado is trying to cross over in a direction many artists don't ordinarily take. Singer Nelly Furtado says she enjoys diversity in music and broadening her fan base.
Singer Nelly Furtado says she enjoys diversity in music and broadening her fan base. With "Mi Plan," the Grammy Award-winning singer is taping into a brand new market and fan base, almost a decade after she came to fame in 2000 with the single "I'm Like a Bird." While the Canadian-born singer -- whose parents are Portuguese -- has sung in Spanish before, "Mi Plan" is the first time she has recorded an entire album in Spanish, a language she said she learned as a teen.

It's seems like a natural progression for Furtado, an artist often noted for diversity in her sound. A few years after her breakthrough, Furtado teamed up with superproducer Timbaland for her 2006 album "Loose," a collaboration that gained her scores of hip-hop and R&B fans as well, and spawned hits such as "Promiscuous" and "Say It Right."
"Mi Plan" pairs her with a few Spanish-language music artists, including Alex Cuba, Juan Luis Guerra, Julieta Venegas and La Mala Rodriguez, as well as English-language artist Josh Groban. The first single off the album, "Manos Al Aire," made history as it marked the first time a North American artist reached No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Latin Songs chart with a song that was originally written in Spanish, rather than a translated version of an English-language song. Furtado spoke with CNN about her passion for Spanish, why she feels like an artist reborn and the career path she hopes to take.

CNN: What was the inspiration for the new album?

Nelly Furtado: There were so many inspirations. The language was the biggest inspiration. I've sang so much in Spanish in the past, and also Portuguese. I get a lot of joy in singing in Latin languages. It expresses the Latin side of me. Video Watch Furtado talk about her new album » My parents were born in Portugal and they raised us in Canada. We grew up speaking Portuguese and then I learned Spanish at the age of 14. I love being a multicultural artist, I love being a global artist. [The album] is almost like a literal reflection of that this time in the fact that it's all in Spanish and it's a completely original project written from scratch.

CNN: So it's all new? Furtado: Yes. It feels like a rebirth of sorts. It's almost like a parallel world where I get to reinvent myself again as an artist, but in a very whole kind of way. It's been a lot of fun.

CNN: You have such a loyal fan base. What do you hope they get from your latest project?

Furtado: Just because I have collaborated with so many different people with so many different styles of music that I think my sort of goal or mantra my whole career has been to broaden the minds of my fan base. This album is just an extension of that. I'm an inclusive person and everyone is invited to the fiesta. I'm excited because I am meeting brand new fans for the first time who don't have any of my prior albums. Four albums in, it's a tough job to try to attract new fans and I think that's what I am doing with this new music.

CNN: Did you consider it risky to do a Spanish-language album?

Furtado: I like to take risks. I live for risk taking and challenges. I just find it so much more exciting and it keeps my job entertaining and interesting. Everyone is looking for that next challenge at work. Everyone wants that extra credential on their business card. If it's easy, it's not fun.

CNN: How is performing in Spanish different?

Furtado: When I express myself in Spanish or in Portuguese I feel very free. There are a lot of things you can say in a Spanish song that you can't say in an English song, especially from a feminine perspective. As a female, the moment you sing too passionately in English you are kind of labeled as an angry singer. In Spanish that doesn't happen. You can be dramatic as you want and it's accepted. So it's liberating.

CNN: There are a lot of Spanish-speaking artists who want to cross over into the English-language market. How does it feel to be doing the reverse?

Furtado: I think I'm capitalizing a little bit on the inroads I have already made in the Latin world through working with other established Latin acts. I dabbled in Spanish on my third album. I had two records on there in Spanish and I really enjoyed writing them and playing them live. I'm just going where my heart's at and following the passions.

CNN: What's next for you?

Furtado: It's interesting because when I got off the road from touring with my third album, "Loose," I was exhausted. I tried to write some songs in English and no inspiration really came to me.

Nelly Furtado’s last record, the multiplatinum, dance-flavored “Loose” was mostly recorded at night. The CD highlighted the party girl in Furtado, showcasing her vocals over beats designed for clubs produced by Timbaland. Her new CD though, “Mi Plan,” takes a 180-degree spin from that. The album was recorded during the day and was more reflective of her life now, as the married mother of a 5-year-old girl. “I would literally wake up in the morning, drive my daughter to school and drive right to the studio and work all day,” said the 30-year-old, who got married last July. “That’s why it has a fresh, light, pure energy.

The CD is also her first album in Spanish. The Grammy-winning Furtado, who parents migrated from Portugal to Canada, says writing Spanish pop songs helped her get over the writer’s block that came after trying to recreate songs like her No. 1 hits “Promiscuous” and “Say It Right.” Q What was different about writing songs in Spanish? A I’m singing with a strength, but I’m also conveying a vulnerability, and I think that it’s something that I’m only capable of doing if I sing in a Latin language, that very succinct emotion. So really I use this album as a tool, I use it as a tool to further explore my emotions and my songwriting. Q What is the theme of the CD? A This album “Mi Plan” is really a personal album. Basically the big theme is love.

My last three albums, I had songs that maybe explored certain aspects of love, but they’re not really direct love songs. On this album, the songs are a lot more simple. Q How did your love life play a role on the making of the CD? A I’ve been really happy. It’s been a fun year for me. I just got married a year ago and I think that a lot of the sort of commitment and joy of commitment, that experience ... helps me creatively. I find that creativity flourishes when I’m really settled in my personal life and that’s reflected on “Mi Plan.”

Q Did your daughter have any influence on the CD? A She has an opinion on my music. About six months ago I had about 20 demos to choose from (and) I played her some stuff, and she liked the faster songs better. She said, “Mommy, there are too many slow songs.” And I went, “Hmm, there are some things that 5-year-olds can be right about ...” So I went back to the studio and I did more fast songs (laughs).

Q Since “Loose” was so successful, did you feel like you needed to capitalize on that and put out something similar? A It was a big success commercially, and of course my record company would have loved an English album right after. But at the same time they understood that really as an artist you have to grow at your own pace, you have to do what feels right. ... I think after eight years of recording English pop songs I just had writer’s block. And then when I started writing pop songs in Spanish, I really felt alive again. ...and actually it cured my writer’s block because I have since written in English again.

Q Have you worked with Timbaland? A Timbaland and I hooked up over spring break and we wrote about 10 songs together and we had a blast. The magic’s still there between us. We love each other so much. We fight sometimes, but we really always come back to that special musical friendship that we have.

Singer, songwriter and producer Nelly Furtado's new album Mi Plan debuts at #1 on Billboard's "Top Latin Albums" chart, making it the highest debut of 2009 for a Latin Pop album.

With MI PLAN also entrenched atop both the iTunes and Amazon Latin sales charts, the album is simultaneously the genre's top digital release in the country. Continuing Furtado's chart-topping trend this week, the album's first single, “Manos al Aire” continues to firmly hold the Number One position on the "Hot Latin Songs" chart for a fourth consecutive week.
On the international front, MI PLAN bowed at #1 on iTunes Mexico, #1 in Central Americaand posted Top 5 album chart debuts in Germany, Colombia, Spain and Mexico, as well as top 20 on the Canadian Soundscan. “Manos al Aire” is likewise dominating radio charts in those countries- as well as Italy, Chile, Mexico and the rest of Latin America.

Hey everybody !!

This year, I had the opportunity to perform in the ALMA AWARDS! as you all know the first time I sang in the ALMA’s was with Juanes a couple of years ago! We sang together Fotografía!! And it was amazing!!! This year I had the great opportunity to sing my new single in Spanish: MANOS AL AIRE!!

I have to confess I felt a mixture of sensations before getting to the stage! I felt nervous, anxious and exited at the same time!! We were ready to make peace and surrender to Love!

Hope you were able to see the performance it was really cool! We all enjoy it a lot and as always hopping you did too!
