Dear Senior General Than Shwe:

We respectfully urge you to take swift action to free prisoner of conscience Ma Khin Khin Leh, who has been imprisoned solely due to her peaceful political activities. Ma Khin Khin Leh and her husband were among a group of people planning a demonstration to take place in the town of Bago on July 19, 1999. Days before the demonstration was to occur, security agents arrested Ma Khin Khin Leh and her three year-old daughter. Although her daughter was released after five days in detention, Ma Khin Khin Leh was transferred to Insein Prison in Yangon, where she is believed to be held today. Following an unfair trial, a court sentenced her in December 1999 to life imprisonment under vaguely-worded security legislation. Ma Khin Khin Leh reportedly suffers from a lung problem, rheumatoid arthritis and dysentery. Amnesty International is concerned for her safety and well-being.

We are alarmed that broad security laws are used in Myanmar to prosecute people for peaceful political and religious activities. As you know, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights asserts that all people have the right to freedom of opinion and expression and the right to peaceful assembly and association.

We respectfully urge you to bring about the immediate and unconditional release of Ma Khin Khin Leh and all prisoners of conscience in Myanmar. Thank you.

Hi THE CURE, i´m really happy for this news, i´m a fan from Venezuela, specifically from Valencia (Yes, there is a city called Valencia here), i write to you guys because i know that you are a band commited to human rights, i don´t know if you are aware of the situation of my country, is very worrying. The government pretends to close the media, and arrest all those political leaders who oppose president Chavez, and in 2007 the government closed the first tv channel, and now are trying to close the second one, radio and newspapers are also threatened, we need some help here, we need the world finds out what is happening here, you are a band that speak to youth, like me, who refuse to believe in my own generation and all the new shit musicians, so you could raise concience in young minds, venezuelans are very worried and desperate right now. Congrats to The Cure and its fans on this act of compassion and bravery. You set a great example. It's always great to see public people getting involved with actions to promote peace and justice all around the world. I know it's a little early maybe, but I' d like to wish a Happy Birthday to Robert Smith !! Hope to Faith

This is wonderful! Sometimes i feel injustice is unstoppable and that there is nothing i can do to help... i even feel hopeless sometimes in front of the horrors of the world. But then you came with a cause and ask all the people that follows you to help with a grain of sand, just signing, just being aware... and finally something like this happens and i feel hope can turn again into faith. Thank you for being aware and for making us aware too.

I remember

reading about this sometime about a year ago. This is great news. I can't begin to imagine the pain that Ma Khin Khin Leh must have gone through over the past ten years. Her daughter must now be 13. It is sad that she missed seeing her daughter grow up. Though it is not known whether there is a connection between her release and AI's involvement, she is fortunate that she was cherry-picked by AI to be a prominent part of their campaign to free the prisoners of conscience. Hopefully her release will help pave the path to freedom for the thousands of others who are still imprisoned.
