“I want to be the voice of L.A.,” says Latin lyrical assassin Omar Cruz, sitting inside a fortified warehouse just east of downtown. His black T-shirt sports a woman’s ass, a classic shot by Latino photographer Estevan Oriol: She’s got the word “West” tatted on one cheek and “Coast” on the other.
This is the compound that holds the infamous Mr. Cartoon’s tattoo shop, its walls lined with photos of his work for hip-hop artists Cypress Hill, Eminem, Method Man, Xzibit and 50 Cent, and actor Danny Trejo. Photographer Oriol also runs his Joker clothing line out of the warehouse. It’s a pop-cultural fortress out here, complete with a garage load of Al Capone gangster-style ranflas — classic cars from the ’30s. (The Los Angeles Gun Club is footsteps away for plenty of ammo to reload.)
Today, the 27-year-old Cruz is wearing jeans and a fresh pair of white Luxury kicks, and he’s spitting rhymes like a full clip — “Give birth to every lyric, every word I speak/I embody every rhythm, I’m the heartbeat of the street.” His forearm ink reads “Lyrical,” and the upper arm features a huge script-style “LA,” engraved with a woman’s face on one side and a sad clown on the other. Mr. Cartoon strikes again.

B.Y.I. Entertainment and Omar Cruz ink a 50/50 joint venture deal with
Posted 10/10/2006 by Geffen
Los Angeles, CA -- There's a new rapper in L.A. making noise. His name is Omar Cruz and he's caught the eye of Interscope head Jimmy Iovine, who just inked a deal with B.Y.I. Entertainment.
Luis "LuLu" Torres announced on Friday June 2nd, 2006, that B.Y.I Entertainment (Beyond Your Imagination) has signed a 50/50 joint venture with Interscope/Geffen Records also known as IGA Records. In addition to the new deal, Cruz has teamed up with DJ Skee to release The Cruzifixion mixtape to prepare fans for his upcoming (yet-to-be-titled) major label debut.
"It's time for someone to internationally come out and just kill it," added Mister Cartoon, who will be handling Cruz's art direction, marketing, and will consult on the Omar Cruz project. "We got a 50/50 venture, that’s a miracle, man. The best we're supposed to have is a bunk at the county jail, but we're right here kickin' it with all the family. With Thom Panunzio and Jimmy Iovine in our corner we got nothing to lose" says Mister Cartoon.
The Cruzifixion features beats from Javie Lopez, Julian Bunetta as well as B.Y.I. producer Rome. “The same way Dre sampled from Bootsy Collins, George Clinton and Funkadelic, we’re taking stuff from our culture. We’re making a point of doing it and creating a new sound that is becoming the BYI sound, the Omar Cruz sound. It’s the vintage Latino flavor mixed in with the hard-hitting hip-hop,” Cruz explains.
As Omar Cruz spreads like a wildfire, his appearances on high-profile remixes becomes more common as he works on his major-label debut album, Omar Cruz has claimed a special spot in the rap world. “What haven’t you heard from the West, especially LA?” Cruz asks. “Me. You haven’t heard my perspective. You don’t know nothing about us. You see us when you come out here. Pac mentioned us. ‘It wouldn’t be LA without Mexicans.’ Thank you, Pac. Let me take it from here.”
