I also saw the original GNR twice: Once on the "Skin and Bones"(not Dust and Bones) tour and another time with Metallica and Faith No More. The shows with the "semi" original lineup (Matt Sorum was playing drums, the true original lineup would have been with Steve Adler on drums) kicked the C. Democracy show's ass around the block...several times.</div><div> </div><div>Slash is a buddy of mine so maybe I'm biased. I'm not gonna argue with anyone over Axl's talent, the man has an eight-octave range and is an incredible frontman. I first bought Appetite because I'd heard about this guy called Slash. I was a then aspiring guitarist who was more interested in what Slash had to offer. But it took only about 2 -3 complete plays through my tape deck for me to be hooked on what set Guns n Roses apart from all the other music out there...Axl.
This ain't Guns N' Roses. "Guns N' Roses" exists in name only. The flesh-and-blood GNR was an incredible band that made great records from 1986-1991. THAT Guns N' Roses consisted of Slash (lead and rhythm guitar/songwriter) Izzy Stradlin (guitar/songwriter/vocals) Duff McKagan (bass/songwriter/vocals) Steven Adler/Matt Sorum (drums) and W. Axl Rose (lead vocals, songwriter, keyboards)<div> </div><div>The flesh-and-blood GNR started to die in 1992 when Izzy, (who wrote most of the bands strongest material,, on all 4 original studio releases) left, disgusted with Axl's iron fist. Duff, Matt, and Slash soon followed. The ONLY reason "Guns N' Roses" still exists is due to a typical Axl ultimatum that he made to the rest of the band before the start of the "Use Your Illusion" tour: Sign over the rights to the name "Guns N' Roses" or the band would be history.</div><div> </div><div>This record took more than 10 years to make, and cost at least tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars of Interscope's money. But it's still not Guns N' Roses. It's just a W. Axl Rose solo album, and judging it from "Better," a mediocre solo album. </div><div> </div><div>Listen to "Live Like A Suicide," "Appetite For Destruction," (which still is a huge steady seller, 21 years after its release) "GNR Lies," "Use Your Illusion I and II" and even the live album, and then listen to this. There's NO similarity between Chinese Democracy" and the aforementioned albums except for W. Axl Rose's voice.</div><div> </div><div>There's about as much likelihood of the REAL Guns N' Roses coming back into existence as there is for democracy in China. "Chinese Democracy?" Ironic, isn't it?</div><div> </div><div>Just put out solo records, Axl. Let "Guns N' Roses" rest in peace.</div>
